Bladesmithing 101

  • MAXT Makerspace @ Noone Falls 50 Jaffrey Road Peterborough, NH, 03458 United States (map)

Learn the basics of bladesmithing with Alex Silverman in this weekend class.

Students must have taken Alex's Blacksmithing for Beginners class or have equivalent experience in the fundamentals of smithing before taking this class.

Students will create a squirrel tail knife, this is a simple single piece construction with a integrated curved metal handle.  This is a great class to learn the basic setup for making blades, with Alex's basic portable propane forge setup and simple hammer, tongs and anvil. Then dive into how to harden blades for use before sharpening with a belt grinder.

The first day (12-6) will involve forging out your blade before quenching and sending your pieces home with Alex for heat treatment.

The second shorter day (2-4) will follow the sharpening and finishing of your knife ready to use.

Alex is a full time bladesmith and previous competitor on History Channel's 'Forged in Fire'
Students must wear all natural fiber clothing and closed toe leather shoes for this class.
