Make a Book Series: Coptic Bookbinding

  • MAXT Makerspace @ Noone Falls 50 Jaffrey Road Peterborough, NH, 03458 United States (map)

In this workshop participants will learn the ancient technique of Coptic stitch binding. This method, which dates back to the 2nd century A.D. and marked the significant shift from scrolls to the codex format. Coptic bookbinding features an exposed spine with decorative chain stitching, allowing the book to lay completely flat when open—a favorite among artists and journal makers! Attendees will learn how to work with materials such as paper signatures, waxed thread, and sturdy covers, and master the art of sewing individual sections together to create a durable and beautiful book. Whether you're new to bookbinding or refining your skills, this workshop offers a perfect blend of historical craft and modern creativity, ensuring each participant leaves with a handmade book and the knowledge to continue exploring the technique.

Make a Book is a three part series - choose 1, 2 or all 3 programs. Students enrolling in all 3 parts will get a FREE MAXT t-shirt.
